Breathing air pollution may be as toxic as cigarette smoke for pregnant women

Breathing the air outside their homes may be just as toxic to pregnant women —if not more so — as breathing in cigarette smoke, increasing a mom-to-be’s risk of developing deadly complications such as preeclampsia, according to findings from a new University of Florida study.

UF researchers compared birth data with Environmental Protection Agency estimates of air pollution, finding that heavy exposure to four air pollutants led to a significantly increased risk for developing a high blood pressure disorder during pregnancy. The research was published in the January issue of the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

The pollutants include two specific types of fine and coarse particulate matter, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide. According to the EPA, particulate matter includes acids, dust, metals and soil particles. These inhalable particles are released from industries and forest fires and can form when gases react with each other in the air. Sulfur dioxide is emitted from power plants and industries. Most carbon monoxide is produced by car exhaust.

“Fetal development is very sensitive to environmental factors,” said Xiaohui Xu, M.D., Ph.D., an assistant professor of epidemiology in the colleges of Public Health and Health Professions and Medicine. “That is why we wanted to do this research. Hypertension (high blood pressure), in particular, is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, causing a lot of problems for the mother and fetus, including preterm delivery.”

Hypertensive disorders such as gestational hypertension, preeclampsia and the deadly condition it leads to, eclampsia, affect about 10 percent of pregnancies. Despite the serious risks to mother and baby, little is known about what specifically causes these conditions to develop in pregnant women, the researchers say.

Although more studies are needed, the researchers hypothesize that exposure to air pollution during pregnancy may affect a woman’s normal pattern of blood pressure.

“We also want to look at preterm delivery and low birth-weight and find out what the effects of breathing contaminated air are on fetal development.” Xu said.

Everyone knows Bill Gates is the founder of the Microsoft empire, but since he has firmly entrenched himself in philanthropy, his actions have become even grander.

Mr. Gates wants to save the planet and he is funding a research project to do it.

Within one year, Gates and his team of scientists plan to release millions of tons of sulfur dioxide 80,000 feet above New Mexico.  The job of these particles is to reflect sunlight and subsequently cool down the earth.

Well, this is what the team is relying on.

Others are not so convinced.

Many scientists and environmental groups believe that by releasing these toxic particles in the air, Gates will actually cause more harm than good. 

Sulfur dioxide is considered a noxious air pollutant. Inhaling it will have widespread consequences on all living things The respiratory system will be affected and people may also have neurological impairments, eyesight and hearing problems and even damage to the heart and immune system.

Acid rain is another side effect of sulfate particles. This would impact living things both on land and in the sea. Scientists also believe that altered rain patterns will impact food supplies in tropical and subtropical zones, causing drought and famine.

But Gates is moving forward. He is convinced that if we wait on governments to make the necessary changes to carbon taxes, it will be too late.

Government offices and hospitals ban fragrances

Policies promise relief to allergy sufferers and chemically sensitive persons
Public buildings with a no-scent policy can help

In Tuttle, Oklahoma, city hall visitors wearing perfumes are asked to remain at the front of the building. City workers in Portland, Oregon, have been banned from using fragrance.

A medical center in Bremerton, Washington, also asks employees and visitors to skip scents and to choose less fragrant flowers, while a hospital in Windom, Minnesota has been fragrance-free since 1999.

Perfumes and fragrances, or aroma compounds, are chemical compounds that have a smell or odor.

In a two-phase population study published in Environmental Health Perspectives, perfume was one of three main culprits of triggering attacks in people with chemical sensitivities, along with cleaning agents and pesticides.

May is MCS Awareness Month

Do you live in an allergy-prone city?

  5. Wichita, KS

While many southern cities were named some of the worst spots, a majority of the "allergy capitals" are located in the Eastern United States, including northeast and southeast states.

Typically, spring allergies last from March to May, when trees like oak, mountain cedar, elm and maple begin to pollinate, but this year’s season may last longer since high temperatures made pollen counts spike much earlier.

Experts suggest that those suffering from hay fever get tested, use antihistamines, eye drops and a saline wash for the sinuses, avoid outdoor activities between 10 am and 2 pm when pollen production is highest and take quick showers at night to wash off pollen.

Keeping a home clean and uncluttered also helps reduce the allergen count indoors.

Just being in a room boosts bacteria count

New research by Yale University engineers shows that a person’s presence in a room can add 37 million bacteria to the air every hour.

The bacteria come from material largely left behind by others and stirred up from the floor.

People’s own microorganisms are a major ingredient in the microbial soup in most indoor environments and floor dust is a major source of exposure, the researchers say.

Other studies have examined the variety of germs present in everyday spaces, but this study is the first to look at how much an individual presence affects the levels of bacteria in the air.

The researchers analyzed biological particles in a single, ground-floor university classroom over a period of eight days.

During four of those days the room was periodically occupied, and four days the room was continuously vacant.

The windows and doors stayed closed during the time of examination, but the HVAC system operated at normal levels.

Large biological particles spike with human presence

When the room was occupied, the researchers found that airborne concentrations of bacteria and fungi substantially increased, especially in larger-sized particles.

The size of the particles was noted because size affects the degree to which they are likely to be filtered from the air or remain in the space.

They found that about 18 percent of all bacterial emissions in the room came from humans (as opposed to plants and other sources). One of the most abundant is commonly found on human skin.

Carpeted rooms appeared to retain higher amounts of microorganisms, the researchers say, but less than 0.1 percent of them are infectious.

Still, this new understanding can help people take the right steps toward better indoor air quality when necessary, they say, since most infectious diseases are spread indoors.

Protect children from toxic house dust

It’s not only airborne chemicals and gases in the home that pose a risk to children’s health.

Dust, a common occurrence in indoor environments, can also carry exposure risks.

That’s because a lot of pollutants can attach themselves to tiny dust particles, and when the dust is disturbed and becomes airborne, it too becomes a respiratory hazard.

Studies show that house dust can contain chemical pollutants such as flame retardants, metals like lead, mercury and poisons like pesticides. Even bacteria and viruses can attach themselves to dust particles and pose exposure risks.

  2. Clean with moisture. The best way to avoid disturbing existing dust is to vacuum with a HEPA vacuum cleaner and use a wet cloth and mop. You don’t need harsh chemicals in the water, a bit of white vinegar or a few drops of soap will be enough.
  3. Store toys in closed containers and avoid a lot of knickknacks and clutter in the house.

Air pollution linked to joint disease

risk of rheumatoid arthritis, study shows.
Breathing in smog and polluted air on a regular basis is not only bad for your lungs and heart – it can also increase your risk of rheumatoid arthritis, a new study suggests.

Sulfur dioxide, the main component of smog, was associated with modest increases in risk for the painful joint disease.

The study involved 2,092 rheumatoid arthritis patients and more than 93,000 people without the disease in the United States and Sweden.

The researchers determined their long-term exposure to common air pollutants, including gases like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and particles like soot or dust, based on the participants’ home addresses.

Exposure to particulate air pollution like soot and dust did not show any higher risks for the disease, but exposure to sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen in the 10 and 20 years before the onset of rheumatoid arthritis showed an increased risk.

People with lower socioeconomic status were also at a higher risk because they tend to live in houses where more air pollution leaks in from the outside, the researchers said.

These preliminary findings have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal and should be regarded as preliminary.

The causes of rheumatoid arthritis are still unknown, but researchers blame a combination of genes, early life events and environmental factors, among others. About 1.3 million Americans suffer from RA.

Dust mite toddler test predicts future asthma risk

Wheezy toddlers who have a sensitivity to house dust mites are more at risk of developing asthma by the age of 12, a University of Melbourne led study has shown.

Children aged one to two years with a family history of allergy, who had a positive skin prick test to house dust mites, had a higher risk of developing asthma later in life. Results showed 75 per cent of these children had asthma at aged 12 compared to 36 per cent of children without a positive skin prick test. 

Lead author Dr Caroline Lodge from the University of Melbourne's School of Population Health said the identification of house dust mites as a predictor for asthma in high risk children, is a significant step forward in identifying high risk groups on whom we can trial interventions.

"Our findings provide researchers with a more targeted group of at risk children, for investigating strategies to prevent asthma later in life," she said.

"House dust mite sensitivity amongst wheezy toddlers could be used as a clinical tool to assist parents in understanding the risk of asthma in their children. 

"Although currently there is no known intervention to stop asthma developing, identifying children at higher risk may lead to more tailored treatments of wheeze in this high risk group."

The study followed 620 children, with a family history of allergies, from birth to 12 years old. 

Researchers tested the children at the ages of one and two years, for single and multiple sensitivity to milk, egg, peanut, rye grass, cat and house hold dust mites and then again at the age of 12 for having asthma.

"We found in the children aged one to two years, that whatever the mix of sensitivity, if their skin reacted to house dust mites they had a higher chance of developing asthma later in life," Dr Lodge said.

"Our study did not show house dust mites caused asthma but it highlighted a strong correlation between sensitivity and more severe wheeze and asthma."

It’s not the first time chemical pollutants have been linked to diabetes. In fact, previous studies have also linked pesticides, PCBs and other chemicals known as "persistent organic pollutants" to an increased risk.

Ironically, many of these pesticides and chemicals have been banned since the 1970s, but “persist”, as the name suggests, in the environment for years, building up in human and animal body fat.

This latest study, published in the most recent issue of Diabetes Care, analyzed blood samples of 2,000 adults and found that those with the highest levels of the pesticide oxychlordane were about twice as likely to have diabetes.

The link appeared to be limited to people who were overweight or obese.

That, the researchers told the Reuters news service, suggests that the pollutants and body fat "may have a synergistic effect on the risk of type 2 diabetes."

Past research also suggests that some persistent organic pollutants impair the body's ability to regulate blood sugar, which could also help explain the link.

Chemical exposure routes 

Besides diet, another main exposure route for chemicals is inhalation.

Numerous chemicals commonly found in households have the ability to become airborne as a gas, vapor or attached to dust.

Is your dog stinky? It may be allergies


It seems not even your pet is immune to the pollen and airborne mold plaguing many U.S. regions this year. Veterinarians are reporting an increase in allergy cases in dogs this summer. The first tip off for owners may be an extra smelly pet. 

"A lot of dogs smell bad when they have an allergic skin disease, their ears are infected their skin is infected …” says Doctor Laura Nelson, a vet in Indiana.
For dog, just like for humans the problem is inhalation.

“It's really hard to avoid the pollen, the trees, the grasses, the house dust mites…” she says. “It's not that the dogs are rolling in it it's that they are breathing it."

Allergy experts generally recommend toweling down your pet when they come in from outside. This will not only help the dog, but will also prevent pollen allergens from spreading around the home.

Ominous World Record: Pregnant Californians have the highest levels ever recorded of banned chemical

Despite being outlawed in 2004, scientists have found that polybrominated diphenyl ethers, also known as PBDEs, are showing up at unprecedented levels in pregnant woman in California.

They believe the results may stem from the state's strict flammability regulations.

Before the ban the chemicals were commonly used to treat polyurethane foam to slow the rate the material would burn if it caught fire.

The foam was widely used in couches, chairs, mattresses, baby products and other household items.

It was later discovered that the PBDEs were not bound to the foam and instead scattered easily in the air and could be inhaled through dust. Much of the furniture is still being used today in homes, restaurants and offices making PBDEs present throughout the state.

The UCSF-led research team found high levels of PBDEs, as well as the by-products that result when the flame retardants break down in the body, in 25 second-trimester pregnant women from Northern and Central California seeking care in San Francisco.

“While our study group was small, the higher chemical exposure in pregnant women is particularly concerning and warrants further research. PBDEs can disrupt the thyroid system and have been linked to neurodevelopmental problems in children following prenatal exposure,” said Ami R. Zota, ScD, MS, lead author.

Another UCSF study recently found that the bodies of virtually all U.S. pregnant women carry multiple chemicals, including PBDEs and others banned since the 1970s. 

That research was the first time that the number of chemicals to which pregnant women are exposed has been counted.

Investigate and find the source of the odors

Often when we live in a space, we can get used to the smells surrounding us. To check things out, if you're away from home more than six hours, take a good long sniff when you walk in.

If you detect an unpleasant smell, don't excuse it away because the house "has been closed up." Odor is a sign that something is wrong. If you don't trust your own nose, ask your most candid friend. If your house is for sale, ask your realtor to give an honest opinion.

Common sources of odor include cooking, water, pets and smoking. Pet odors spark concern that once a smell is present, it can never be eradicated. Keeping litter boxes scrupulously clean is a good first step.

Concrete or wood floors that have been saturated with pet urine may require professional treatment, including removing soiled carpet and padding.

Check for water damage

Musty smells often come from water. Check sink and bath drains for odors at the drain traps. Leaking sewer or water pipes may also be a source. A plumber can help correct the problem.

Air conditioning condensation can leak, generating smelly mold. There could be a roof or siding leak, where water is infiltrating, triggering mold growth. Air ducts can trap dust and mold, making the air smelly. If you need help isolating an odor, call a home inspector.

Eliminate the odors the right way

Never try to spray a smell away. If your home has a smell, it has a problem, and fixing the problem is better than perfuming it.

Overuse of home scents can be as off-putting as pet odor – and it can be dangerous to your health and well-being. Work to create a fresh-smelling home vs. one that's heavy and overly perfumed.

Good maintenance and fixing any problems around the house is a must. A is for Asthma: Preparing Your Asthmatic Child for Back to School

For parents of an asthmatic child, back to school doesn’t only mean a return to class it also means gearing up for a new season of meds, colds and potential hospital visits.

“Since my son’s first year at preschool we’ve made at least one hospital visit in September or early October,” says Stephanie Bristow, an Air Quality Expert with AllerAir. “At home we have all of our triggers under control and great tools to help us like a HEPA and carbon air purifier, but school brings on a whole new onslaught of viruses and pollutants that we can't control as effectively.”

To help prepare your family for back to school, consider adding these “to-do” items to your back-to-school checklist:

Schedule a doctor’s appointment to update or create an asthma action plan for your child

All students should have a detailed, written action plan. It should contain personal information about the child's asthma symptoms, triggers, medications, any physical activity limitations and provide very specific instructions about what the school (or you) should do if an asthma attack does not improve with prescribed medication. Make sure a copy of this plan is provided to your child’s teacher, school nurse and is added to his/her personal file.

Update your emergency contact list with the front office

Ensure that your child's school knows how to contact you in case of an emergency. Make sure that your home phone, cell phone, email address and the information for your secondary contacts is correct.

Know exactly how the school will handle an asthma emergency

Find out what your school’s policy is on dealing with asthma episodes. Ask how often the school nurse is on site and if staff, after-school coaches and bus drivers know what to do to respond to an asthma emergency.

Check your equipment and medication

Many schools require that younger children leave a set of their equipment and meds (aero chamber, rescue inhaler etc.) at school. Make sure to check expiry dates of these meds and double check to make sure items like aero chambers still property fit your child’s face. Some experts also recommend replacing chambers regularly as a film can actually build up on the inside of the tube and affect proper delivery of the medication.

Talk to your child about what to do

Especially with younger children, make sure they know exactly what to do if they feel like they’re having trouble breathing. Who should they go to first? Is it ok to interrupt their teachers? Can they administer their own meds? Leave class? Call you? Answering these questions in advance will help your child act promptly if they feel an attack coming on.

Phoenix, Arizona Dust Storm: Check all your home and vehicle air filters ASAP
