Indiana Initiative: Protecting Air Quality

28 March 2006--Indiana's Department of Environmental Management issued a warning to northern Indiana residents advising them to take measures to control air quality. The warning was issued because a bout of relatively stagnant weather conditions created a risk for high levels of airborne particulate matter. Tips to residents included driving slowly on dirt roads, avoiding the use of wood-burning stoves, and taking public transportation to reduce the amount of soot, dust, chemical matter and smoke in the air. Airborne pollutants can build up in the lungs. The department further advised against strenuous exercise. It also recommended the use of indoor air purifiers to mitigate the risk for inhaling toxins.
