Using Papaya seeds and clay could cut cost of water purification in developing countries; save lives

An inexpensive new material made of clay and papaya seeds removes harmful metals from water and could lower the cost of providing clean water to millions of people in the developing world, scientists are reporting. Their study on this "hybrid clay" appears in the journal ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering.

Emmanuel Unuabonah and colleagues explain that almost 1 billion people in developing countries lack access to reliable supplies of clean water for drinking, cooking and other key uses. One health problem resulting from that shortage involves exposure to heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury, released from industrial sources into the water. Technology exists for removing those metals from drinking water, but often is too costly in developing countries. So these scientists looked for a more affordable and sustainable water treatment adsorbent.

They turned to two materials readily available in some developing countries. One was kaolinite clay, used to make ceramics, paint, paper and other products. The other: seeds of the Carica papaya fruit. Both had been used separately in water purification in the past, but until now, they had not been combined in what the scientists term "hybrid clay." Their documentation of the clay's effectiveness established that the material "has a strong potential for replacing commercial activated carbon in treatment of wastewater in the developing world."

The pros and cons of HEPA air purifiers

HEPA or High Efficiency Particulate Arresting air purifiers use a fibrous filter to trap ultrafine particles. HEPA filtration was actually born from an infamous and historically significant event; the development of the atomic bomb. It was created to prevent the spread of minute radioactive particles. Today, HEPA plays an equally important role in home air purifiers, filtering dangerous particles from air pollution and smoke that have been linked to heart disease, cancer and respiratory illnesses. While widely recommended, HEPA-only air purifiers have a significant disadvantage; they cannot filter out other worrisome modern-day pollutants like chemicals, gases and odors.

What exactly is HEPA?
HEPA filters are comprised from tightly arranged fibres that trap hazardous fine particles that could otherwise be inhaled and settle in the body. To be classified as HEPA, the filter must remove at least 99.97% of all particles greater than 0.3 micrometers. Air purifiers that claim to be "HEPA-type" or “HEPA-like” may not have been adequately tested and could provide inferior air filtration. 

Why can’t HEPA air purifiers filter all types of contaminants?
While the design of the HEPA filter is ideal for trapping ultrafine particles, other pollutants like gases, fumes, chemicals and odors pass right through.  Air purifiers that trap a wider range of contaminants combine HEPA filtration with another filtration media.

The most efficient filter material for trapping gaseous pollutants is activated carbon. Like HEPA, activated carbon was developed by the military, and then commercialized for residential use.  It’s so effective, that activated carbon is widely used by heavy industry to trap toxic chemicals and is also used in water filtration. As home air quality concerns shift to dangerous airborne chemicals, some manufacturers have unfortunately used carbon as marketing ploy. These types of inefficient air purifiers use only a thin carbon mesh and claim their units can remove odors and chemicals. The adsorption capacity of carbon-mesh is so limited that these types of filters may be full within only weeks or days of use, depending on the level of pollutants in the environment. Only air purifiers with pounds of deep-bed activated carbon can provide lasting adsorption of chemicals, gases and odors.

FAQ: Activated Carbon in Home Air Purifiers for Chemicals and Odors

Although carbon purification has been used for thousands of years, most people unfamiliar with air filtration are surprised to see activated carbon filters when beginning their research on air purifiers. Activated carbon, also known as activated charcoal, is an important level in the filtration process that removes airborne chemicals, gases and odors.  When paired with a good quality particle filter, air purifiers with activated carbon filters remove a much wider range of contaminants than a standard HEPA-only dust cleaner.

What is Activated Carbon?
Carbon which is “activated” has undergone a process to open up millions of tiny pores and fissures. American Academy of Pediatrics Weighs In on Organic Foods for Children

AAP report cites lower pesticides in organic produce and potentially lower risk of exposure to drug-resistant bacteria, but says the most important thing for children is to eat a wide variety of produce, whether it’s conventional or organic.

 
Parents know it’s important for children to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy products, and whole grains. But it’s less clear whether spending the extra money on organic foods will bring a significant benefit to their children’s health.
 
To offer guidance to parents – and the pediatricians caring for their children’s health – the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has conducted an extensive analysis of scientific evidence surrounding organic produce, dairy products and meat. The conclusion is mixed: While organic foods have the same vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, proteins, lipids and other nutrients as conventional foods, they also have lower pesticide levels, which may be significant for children. Organically raised animals are also less likely to be contaminated with drug-resistant bacteria because organic farming rules prohibit the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics.
 
However, in the long term, there is currently no direct evidence that consuming an organic diet leads to improved health or lower risk of disease. However, no large studies in humans have been performed that specifically address this issue.
 
“What’s most important is that children eat a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free dairy products, whether those are conventional or organic foods. This type of diet has proven health benefits,” said Janet Silverstein, MD, FAAP, a member of the AAP Committee on Nutrition and one of the lead authors of the report. “Many families have a limited food budget, and we do not want families to choose to consume smaller amounts of more expensive organic foods and thus reduce their overall intake of healthy foods like produce.”
 
The AAP report, “Organic Foods: Health and Environmental Advantages and Disadvantages,” will be released at a news conference at 1 p.m. CT Monday, Oct. 22 at the AAP National Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans. It will be published in the November 2012 issue of Pediatrics.
 
The report outlines the research that has been conducted on organic foods, including convincing evidence of lower exposure to pesticides and less contamination of livestock with drug-resistant bacteria.
“At this point, we simply do not have the scientific evidence to know whether the difference in pesticide levels will impact a person’s health over a lifetime, though we do know that children – especially young children whose brains are developing – are uniquely vulnerable to chemical exposures,” said Joel Forman, MD, FAAP, a member of the AAP Council on Environmental Health and one of the lead authors of the AAP clinical report.
 
If cost is a factor, families can be selective in choosing organic foods, Dr. Forman said. Some conventionally grown fruits and vegetables tend to have lower pesticide residues. The AAP cites organic shopper’s guides like those provided by Consumer Reports and the Environmental Working Group as references for consumers.
 
The AAP found no individual health benefit from purchasing organic milk, but emphasizes that all milk should be pasteurized to reduce the risk of bacterial infections. Raw milk increases the risk of serious infection with bacteria including Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, Campylobacter and Brucella. 
 
Purchasing meat from organic farms that do not use antibiotics for nontherapeutic uses has the potential to reduce antibiotic resistance in bacteria that infect people. The AAP calls for large, well-designed, prospective cohort studies that directly measure environmental exposures such as estrogen at low levels to understand the impact of hormonal exposure of children through milk and meat.
 
The AAP report also notes that the motivation to choose organic produce, meat and dairy products may be reasonably based on larger environmental issues, as well as human health impacts like pollution and global climate change.
 
“Pediatricians want families to have the information they need to make wise food choices,” said Dr. Forman. “We hope that additional research will improve our understanding of these issues, including large studies that measure environmental exposures and neurodevelopment.”

Do you live in an allergy-prone city?

The data was provided by three different sources: Pollen.com, IMS Health and the American Board of Medical Specialties.

According to researchers, some of the worst cities for allergies include:

  2. McAllen, TX
  3. Louisville, KY
  4. Jackson, MS
  5. Wichita, KS

While many southern cities were named some of the worst spots, a majority of the "allergy capitals" are located in the Eastern United States, including northeast and southeast states.

Typically, spring allergies last from March to May, when trees like oak, mountain cedar, elm and maple begin to pollinate, but this year’s season may last longer since high temperatures made pollen counts spike much earlier.

Experts suggest that those suffering from hay fever get tested, use antihistamines, eye drops and a saline wash for the sinuses, avoid outdoor activities between 10 am and 2 pm when pollen production is highest and take quick showers at night to wash off pollen.

Keeping a home clean and uncluttered also helps reduce the allergen count indoors.

Just being in a room boosts bacteria count

New research by Yale University engineers shows that a person’s presence in a room can add 37 million bacteria to the air every hour.

The bacteria come from material largely left behind by others and stirred up from the floor.

People’s own microorganisms are a major ingredient in the microbial soup in most indoor environments and floor dust is a major source of exposure, the researchers say.

Other studies have examined the variety of germs present in everyday spaces, but this study is the first to look at how much an individual presence affects the levels of bacteria in the air.

The researchers analyzed biological particles in a single, ground-floor university classroom over a period of eight days.

During four of those days the room was periodically occupied, and four days the room was continuously vacant.

The windows and doors stayed closed during the time of examination, but the HVAC system operated at normal levels.

When the room was occupied, the researchers found that airborne concentrations of bacteria and fungi substantially increased, especially in larger-sized particles.

The size of the particles was noted because size affects the degree to which they are likely to be filtered from the air or remain in the space.

They found that about 18 percent of all bacterial emissions in the room came from humans (as opposed to plants and other sources). One of the most abundant is commonly found on human skin.

Carpeted rooms appeared to retain higher amounts of microorganisms, the researchers say, but less than 0.1 percent of them are infectious.

Still, this new understanding can help people take the right steps toward better indoor air quality when necessary, they say, since most infectious diseases are spread indoors.

Q&A: How often do I have to change the activated carbon filter?

An air purifier with activated carbon and HEPA can remove a wide range of indoor air pollutants – but many clients are wondering about the filter changes.

How long does activated carbon last? When is it saturated?

There is no all-encompassing easy answer. Activated carbon is the best and safest filter media to adsorb (meaning to trap by way of chemical reaction on its internal surface area) a large number of gaseous pollutants and chemicals.

AllerAir is proud to offer customers 100% virgin activated carbon, meaning it hasn’t been recycled or restocked (that’s why we also don’t accept air filter returns). So when you get your air purifier, it is performing at full capacity and adsorbing a wide range of odors, chemicals and gases.

How long the carbon will last depends on your indoor air quality and requirements. It is not an exact science.

Typically, an activated carbon filter will last about two years, but in many reasonably “green” or “non-toxic” households, it can last up to 5 years. For optimal performance and ease of mind, most people decide to change it after 2 years.

AllerAir suggests the following:
  • Asses your indoor air quality. An air quality test is good, but make sure it takes not only dust and mold into account, but also chemicals and gases. Make a list of possible sources: Building materials such as drywall, paint, adhesives, glues, particleboard, carpeting, window treatments, cleaning agents, pets, etc.
  • When was the last time you renovated? Renovations will put extra strain on your air purifier, since the chemicals, fumes and particles released in the process may fill up the filter faster than usual
  • Make a note in your calendar or put up a reminder notice. Then reassess the situation after two years.

Many people will realize their carbon filter needs changing because it doesn’t seem to be working as well as before – the nose is a good guide.

Certain illnesses common to all oil spills: toxicologist

exposure's health effects, toxicologist says.
Living or working near the site of an oil spill can lead to serious health effects, including headaches, migraines, nausea, burning eyes, memory loss, rashes, breathing problems – even seizures.

Environmental toxicologists have been tracking the health impacts of oil spills for a while now, and the above-mentioned conditions are common among all of them.

The health effects show up in people of all ages, sizes, races who are exposed to the chemicals released during an oil spills.

This July, a peer-reviewed study of oil spill exposure found the same set of symptoms in each location along recent oil spills, according to an article in the Michigan Messenger.

Researchers are also looking at reproductive concerns, since many of the chemicals have been shown to impact fetuses in the first trimester.

Chemical illness is a relatively new field for doctors and most insurance companies have no billing code for it, which makes diagnosis tricky.

The problem with chemical exposure is that low levels can accumulate in the body over the course of continued exposure and lead to health effects down the road.
